New class at the Michelle Danner Acting Studio: Stage Combat
LA acting class: starting Saturday, October 13th
This LA acting class is necessary for performers entering either stage or television/film productions where unarmed combat may take place. Students will learn the primary techniques of hand to hand combat (slaps and punches). All students train in learning choreography and quickly bringing fights to the performance level.

LA acting class: Stage Combat
All students participating in the stage combat course must arrive with water, no opened toed shoes, something comfortable to move in (preferably all black attire), and something to take notes with. Students are not allowed to have food, gum, or any choking hazards in the course room at any time. Students will be required to sign a release form before participating in the stage combat hand to hand course taught by instructor James Fowler.
Week 1:
Beginning Stretch and Physical Warm Up
Safety First/Nobody Gets Hurt Lecture
Students will work through a series of physical combat exercises that focus primarily on Eye Contact and the “knap” sound of the hit. Students will learn the four essentials to the “hit” in stage combat: Prepare, Strike, Follow Through, Reaction.
Week 2:
Beginning Stretch and Physical Warm Up
The Victim is Always in Control Lecture
Students will be required to create a combat map. This map is a written account of each step in a fight:
Cameron Two hand Shoves Michael
Michael does a backwards fall
Cameron grabs Michaels collar and lifts him up
Cameron Slaps Michael with RIGHT hand
Students will learn the rehearsal process of stage combat. Students will partner up and perform their scenes in the correct order of the rehearsal process: Step by Step, Walk Through, Quarter Speed, Half Speed, Full Speed
Week 3:
Intermediate Stretch and Physical Warm Up
Hand to Hand Fighting Styles Lecture/Video
Students will learn the basics of Shoulder Shoves, Falls, Hair/Ear Pulls. Students will be required to partner up and create an improvised scene including the moves of their choice within the safety guidelines and practices. Students will partner up for their halfway point stage combat presentation in their fourth week. Students will write their own dialogue for the scene.
Intermediate Stretch and Physical Warm Up
Halfway Point Review Lecture
Students will be required to present their rehearsed stage combat scenes with dialogue at all speeds. Students will receive notes.
Week 5:
Intermediate Stretch and Physical Warm Up
Reacting Physically Lecture
Students will learn the basics of Head Slams and Slaps. Students will be required to partner in groups of three or more and create a stage combat scene with dialogue using all techniques discussed in previous classes.
Week 6:
Advanced Stretch and Physical Warm Up
Combat for the Stage Lecture
Students will learn the basics of punches and Kicks. Students will do in class research on stage plays that have fight scenes and create the scene using some of the dialogue of the play. Students must use all techniques learned from the course including kicks and punches.
Week 7:
Advanced Stretch and Physical Warm Up
Combat for the Camera Lecture/ Video
Students will learn the basics of Choking, Tripping, Kneeing and Headbutting. Students will be required to do in class research on their favorite Film or Television Stage Combat Scene and reenact it in the class using all techniques discussed to this point. Students will be partnered for their final in class assignment.
Week 8:
Advanced Stretch and Physical Warm Up
Breaking into Stunt/Stage Combat Industry Lecture Students will present final scene and receive notes.
